Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.

◦ First of all, let me tell you that I would like to dedicate this edition in a special way to Montserrat Caballé, hospitalized a few days ago in Barcelona for a mild stroke. All of us love Montserrat Caballé so deeply, not only for what she has meant for the professional career of our beloved tenor, but primarily because his name is to be identified with that of one of the greatest soprano of all time: in my heart, she is incomparable .
Due to this exceptional destination, my mind immediately recalled the memory of her homage concert   that dates back to last January 3 which took place at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, by reason of the 50th anniversary of her debut there. In this big celebration, many friends and colleagues of her joined the stage to perform for her: I can't forget the image of the embrace Josep Carreras gave her: he joined the stage to celebrate her with an emotional version of T'Estimo, her favourite song. Very nice memory, but perhaps still too recent to be proposed today.
◦ You might know that Montserrat Caballé had already organized a similar celebration on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of her debut at the Liceu: it was January 7, 1987. According to what I was told, by big surprise Josep Carreras joined Montserrat on stage for a very special duet: "Già nella notte densa" from Verdi's Otello.
Why is it special? Because they chose a very particular opera, almost new to the usual repertoire of both: Caballé sang it rarely, and Carreras never. Sometimes, Josep has dealt with this topic, identifying in Otello what he would have liked to sing but never did it: the reasons are due to the incompatibility of the opera with the features of his tenor voice, eminently lyric.
Surprise within the surprise, then, as we can notice in this duet, the so lyric ending of the first act of the opera, where the two interpreters are able, however, to create a tremendous complicity, the same that have always shared during all their performances.
◦ We are analysing one of the most extense love duets ever written by the genius of Giuseppe Verdi: Otello initially, with that "Already in the thick night," realises the silence, and then rejoices in the embrace of Desdemona and in her love for him: his lover praised the great warrior he is, and recalls evenings spent away  the one from the other, and their courtship, while Othello describes the adventures that he used to tell her, without excluding the period spent as a slave. Desdemona loved him for all the adventures he had faced, and he loved her back for her loving mercy. Othello's mood changes drastically as he is caught up by the ecstasy of the moment: they both pray so that their love is eternal, and Othello asks her for one last kiss. I suggest you to pay attention to the unique way in which Carreras utters the words "a kiss, one more kiss" (un bacio, un bacio ancora):  frankly, I do not know who else could say it like that.
An amazing moment, either for the brave choice and for the undeniable proof of the fact that, regardless of the song, opera and requisite demanded, the union of Montserrat Caballé and Josep Carreras will always be inexhaustible source of magic. Enjoy it!
GET WELL SOON MONTSERRAT!!!
I hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday for a new video. Wish you all a nice week.
