"Il Video della Settimana": The first Three Tenors concert at the Caracalla Bath in Rome, 23 years ago today

The Three Tenors concert in 1990. Cover of the album by Decca,

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.

23 years ago today an impossible dream was come true: on July 7, 1990, Josep Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti joined into a single entity, The Three Tenors, and performed together, creating a historical event celebrated at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome on the occasion of the World Cup that Italy hosted in 1990. Tohether with them, the two orchestras of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, for a total amount of 200 elements led by the prestigious baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
A completely original mode of celebrating the World Championships that found in Josep Carreras the author of the idea, and in Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti the agreement, and in Mario Dradi the manager that made this dream possible.
Beyond the reasons related to football, what lead to the creation of this unique and incomparable trio was the great chance to celebrate the return to life, and to his profession, of Carreras who had recently established his Foundation for the fight against leukemia to which the proceeds of this concert were to be allocated. Initially it was supposed to be a unique and unrepeatable event: however, the success achieved had been so resounding that made them perform again, starting with the equally memorable concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 1994 until the early years of the new millennium. This success is also due to the fact that this event was broadcast worldwide and to the huge amount of sold copies of the album that turned out to be the classical music's best-selling record in history. As is well known, this phenomenon has been by far the most incisive in the attempt to spread a musical genre, that had always been regarded as an elite, to a much wider and heterogeneous audience.
Many people, myself included, have approached the opera world thanks to one of these concerts and I think it is positive: the important thing is that novices do not forget the fact that even before this magic formula, Carreras Domingo and Pavarotti had more than twenty years of glorious career behind them, that they were three of the most resounding names of their generation of opera singers. Briefly, it is essential to remember that the Three Tenors was just a phase, although extraordinary,  of their professional life, they  lead in parallel to their own individual activities.
The first meeting took place on 5 December 1989, on Josep Carreras' forty-third birthday. The documentary titled The Impossible Dream, included in the special edition DVD of the concert, shows a fragment of this moment where we can notice the relaxed atmosphere and the complicity between the four, as we must include Zubin Mehta too, such as to create some moments of pure fun within the professionalism required to prepare an event of such magnitude.
In the following Youtube Playlist you can watch again some moments of the rehearsals before the concert (1-4), also part of The Impossible Dream. Those of you who will watch them for the first time will surely realize how the seriousness of the event does not prevent a healthy dose of fun that sometimes comes out even during the concert itself making it, without altering the professionalism, even more enjoyable.
As Zubin Mehta claimed, the really amazing thing was to see three tenors singing together, something that is not expected in no opera up to now: for this reason, along with a wide selection of the most representative arias of their repertoire, each chose some of their favourite songs that were arranged in a medley by Lalo Schifrin: this allowed them really to perform together, creating something completely new so far that literally conquered whole masses of people. Although their individual performances were of extraordinary quality, actually such medley was to be the regarded as the real essence of their memorable concerts, particularly of this one that was the very first: their charismatic complicity, the excellence of their talent and their incredible ability to have fun doing what they love most in life is just amazing. For this reason, I cannot but copy the links of each song of the concert.
However, I don't feel like publishing the post before one last surprise. I confess that I watched again the whole concert some days ago, with the same pleasure ever: watching it again 23 years later must be very special either to those who had attended or watched it live on television, or at least to those who remember that moment. If it has a special value for you, try to imagine what meant to Josep Carreras to watch the whole concert with Albert Om during the program El Convidat of TV3, at the Suite of Hotel in Zurich where he was stayingon the occasion of the benefit concert he offered on 2 July, last year. The fragment shows the last encore, the grand finale with Nessun Dorma in the trio version: Josep Carreras experienced it all again through his memory with deep emotion, especially due to the absence of his beloved friend Luciano Pavarotti, whom he has not missed the opportunity to praise in the most sincere way, by referring particularly to his unique emission facility. In my opinion, it was for sure one of the most touching moments in this chapter of El Convidat: to live again such historical moment through the eyes of one of the very protagonists, a look that has touched our heart more than words could ever do. Albert Om was pleased to notice how they could also have fun, and they laughed out loud when Carreras pointed out that, at a certain point Plácido Domingo was leaning on his shoulder and almost made him fall: the genuineness of his expression "aqui quasi em fot per terra el Plácido" (he almost makes me fall), managed to ease, at least, part of the emotion that inevitably has pervaded all of us. You do not need to understand Catalan: the emotion in the eyes of Josep is a universal language. It is with this last video that I would like to remember and celebrate the extraordinary value of such memorable event, just through the touching look of one of the three protagonists.
There will be no more the Three Tenors, but at the same time I'm sure that there will forever! Enjoy it!
Hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video. Have a nice week!!
