Friends of Jose Carreras UK

25 years of friendship

The Friends of Jose Carreras was founded in 1987 in response to Jose's recovery from Leukaemia and the start of the Jose Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation. We are celebrating 25 years this year with special editions of our Newsletters.

Jose already had many fans in the UK and many of these knew each other as friends from meeting at Jose's UK performances. Terry Scarcliffe approached Jutta Fagan and her husband with the idea of in some way helping with funds for the foundation and a network of people who could follow Jose's future career in a more structured way. In October 1987 Jose gave his permission for the founding of the Friends and in Feb 1988 the first membership card was issued, aptly, to Terry Scarcliffe who is still a member today.

As the membership increased the Chairmanship was taken over by Joan Sheppard who ran the club until her death in March 2012.

The club is not primarily a fund raising club but over the years members have donated many thousands of pounds to the Foundation through the Friends. The club exists primarily to celebrate the artistry, courage and humanity of one of the greatest singers of the age, to provide members with news and critique of his performances and to form a bond of friendship between members.
